The hook size you need to use, is depending on the thickness of your yarn, your personal crocheting style (tight or lose) and the effect you want to create (a more open or closed structure). The package of the yarn advises a certain hook size, based on the yarn thickness. However, depending on where you buy the yarn, different systems hook sizes are used. Pretty confusing yes.In general, 3 different systems are used: metric (mm), UK (numbers) and US (numbers and letters). This website uses the metric system, but with the table below you can always check what size you need. Below an overview of the different sizes. When working with a new yarn or crochet hook, it is always good to fist make a smal test swatch, to see if the combination of yarn and hook, create the effect you are looking for.
